Michael,

Throughout people's lives they will find themselves always working at making peace with the parents in their head. Although some people do not want to admit to the power of family in shaping relationships, what they look like, who they are with, how they work and the roles assumed in them, family therapists have long known that family is VERY powerful in shaping those areas.

Over the years, I have been amazed at that power when I do genograms (family trees which examine relationship patterns) with people. The power of grandparents and even great-grand parents is amazing. Rather than ignore these influences, we need to understand them and learn about their influence. Much like the gravity of the sun and moon impact the earth, the power of family relationship exert a pull and power on our present relationships that we have to learn how to deal with.

Choosing to post on that topic was a good idea!

Keep up the good work.

Regards,

Michael and Amy,

I hate to hear the news about Amy's dad. Loses often pose challenges for relationships. I hope that the two of you are handling it well. The post was definitely thought provoking and challenging. I can relate to much of it, having had to pack up for the Hurricane Rita evacuation and loosing a home in Hurricane Ike. Those situations forced us to re-evaluate many things and values. Thank you for posting this.

Best Regards,
